A 2D adventure for the USS Orville

The Orville - 2D Rescue is a free role-playing video game wherein you get to join the wacky crew of the USS Orville. Developed by Elyse Hargreaves, this is a 2D pixelated indie game that is based on the 2017 TV series of the same name, The Orville. Here, you get to create your very own character in the story and interact with the main cast of the show.

Help out on the ship

The Orville is an American science fiction comedy-drama television series that first aired in 2017. Mainly inspired by sci-fi shows such as Star Trek and its sequels, it parodies the space drama genre and tells the hilarious story of Captain Ed Mercer and the crew of the starship USS Orville as they perform their exploratory mission between planets. It eventually became a hit series, especially for fans of Star Trek.

Now here in The Orville - 2D Rescue, you get to play as an original character and join the crew. You start off as a potential captain who decides to get more experience on the job by boarding the USS Orville. Soon after your initiation, however, you have to help the crew as they realize that things may not be normal regarding their plane of reality. The gameplay mostly consists of talking to NPCs and picking up items.

The controls are easy and you get helpful tutorials on what to do whenever a new activity pops up. There’s also a taskbar at the bottom of the screen telling you what your current objective is and where to complete it. In terms of graphics, everything is in a simple pixelated art style except for the character portraits. However, everything is too straightforward and the game feels really short despite the exciting prospect of a customizable avatar.

You may have to check back

The Orville - 2D Rescue is a cute fangame but you shouldn’t expect it to have much substance. Its story is a bit silly but lacks the punch that the original show had. Its bland gameplay and short length don’t help make it shine either—half of your time will be spent constantly going back at forth between hallways and decks as a gofer. Plus, the story isn’t actually finished, with Episode 2 still unavailable.

PROS

  • A simple character creation system
  • You get to interact with the TV show’s characters
  • Cute pixelated graphics
  • Nice caricature character portraits

CONS

  • Gameplay can be a bit too bland
  • The story isn’t fully resolved
  • Not a lot of dialogue to pad more time
